Identification Sheet for Japanese Knotweed

 

Leaves:

10 -15cm in length, green, shield shaped with pointed tips and a flat base, arranged in a zig-zag formation.

Stem:

Bamboo like stem, green with a red and purple mottled colour, hollow.

Flowers:

Small creamy/white in colour, appearing in later Summer and throughout Autumn.

Rhizome:

White shoots emerging from the rhizome. Bright orange inside rhizome.

Identification Sheet for Himalayan Knotweed

 

Leaves:

Large lanceolate type leaf often with a reddish mid-rib.

Stem:

Green stem becoming red nearer the flowering heads. Similar to bamboo in appearance.

Flowers:

Small white flowers appearing from a green/red stem, appearing in late Summer and Autumn.

Rhizome:

Roots are shallow making it easy to pull up.

Leaves:

Very large umbrella-sized leaves, up to 2m across.

Stems:

Leaf stalks up to 1.5m long with reddish bristles and weak spines.

Flower:

A tall and large "cone like" structure, up to 1m in height.

Rhizome:

 

Has a large, dense, horizontal  rhizome that creeps across the ground

Identification Sheet for Giant Hogweed

 

Height:

The size of Giant Hogweed makes it easy to identify, as it can grow up to 5-6m in height.

Stem:

The main stem is large, usually with purple blotches, hollow and can have hairy bristles and be 5-10 cm in diameter.

Flowers:

White or rarely pink, flowering from June to August. There can be up to 50,000 seeds per plant.

Leaves:

Serrated and sharply divided leaves, can grow to 3m in length and 1.5m wide.

Identification Sheet for Himalayan Balsam

 

Height:

Plant grows up to 3 metres (approx 10ft).

Leaves:

Green and serrated, opposite leaves in whorls of 3-5, may also have reddish mid-rib.

Stem:

Brownish/green hollow stems which change to a deep red colour closer to the flowering head.

Flower:

Pink trumpet shaped flower with wide petals.

Roots :

The plant has very shallow roots, making it very easy to pull out of the ground.

Seeds :

Ripe seeds explode when touched. Seeds can be spread up to 7 metres from the parent plant.

Identification Sheet for Rhododendron

 

Height:

Plant can grow up to 6 metres (approx 20ft).

Leaves:

Oval leathery leaves with dull green upper surface and pale green underside, in spiral at end of stem. 

Stem:

Brown solid stems / trunk, often dense and twisted, grows up to 150mm in diameter.

Flower:

Attractive 5 petal, purple to pink flowers, occasionally whiteish.

Seeds :

Seed pods form after flowering, typically dispersed long distances by wind.
